Strata is a puzzle game about strategically weaving layers of coloured ribbons. The game consists of seven large sets of levels, split up into smaller waves with about for to ten levels for each group. Field are symmetrical and typically consist of 2x2 to 6x6 diamonds with up to six different colours. There can be empty spaces as well. The available colours can be selected at the bottom. Next to each row and column the player can click or tap to put down a ribbon in the selected colour that covers the entire row or column. Due to the symmetrical design when a ribbon put down from the opposite side it will cover a part of the initial ribbon. The goal of the game is to complete a level by putting down ribbons at every row and column (four ribbons for a 2x2 field, eight ribbons for 4x4 etc.) while making sure that in the final pattern each diamond's colour matches the one of the ribbon's top layer. Solving puzzles is often based on thinking in reverse. The player starts by figuring which ribbon to put down last and then work their way back to the starting ribbon.
The game offers hints for colours and the order of the ribbon for each level. It is also possible to undo moves. Levels can be perfected by completing patterns without correcting mistakes or using hints. There is an interactive tutorial where the game mechanics are explained. For Android and iOS there is a free-to-play version where most levels are purchased through in-app purchases. The browser version is free and serves as a demo with a small selection of levels.
