Hydorah is a difficult side-scrolling shooter in the vein of R-Type with a classic retro feel. Players command a ship through different levels to fight the evil god Hydorah. The ship can be moved anywhere over the screen and the screen itself moves at a fixed speed. Defeated enemies leave behind capsules that upgrade the primary or secondary weapon, and different kinds of power-ups: special powers, faster speed, shield, extra lives or a new weapon.
Each level ends with a boss and he usually leaves behind a new weapon. The different weapons can be selected prior to the mission start, and there is also a mission map (with branching paths) to follow the progress. The game can only be saved three times and only after finishing a mission. There are six types of secrets to discover.
The game is free to play, but donations are rewarded with bonus tracks and screenshots of unused scenes.
